Fifa Worldcup 2010, First Two Games End in a Tie

Uruguay (0-0) France
South Africa (1-1) Mexico

France and Uruguay contested a truly awful goalless draw in the second match of the 2010 World Cup at the Cape Town Stadium. The result ensured that both of the opening day Group A fixtures ended in draws. In a game of few chances, Uruguay came closest to scoring through a Diego Forlan shot that was saved in the opening half, while they finished the contest with 10 men after substitute Nicolas Lodeiro picked up two bookings.

France were arguably the better team and might have snatched the points with a free-kick from a promising position deep into injury-time, but substitute Thierry Henry’s strike hit the wall.

The opening game of the World Cup between South Africa and Mexico was also tied. South African striker Siphiwe Shabalala opened the scoring in the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a stunning goal during the 55th minute of the game. But Mexico, whose superiority in the FIFA rankings transpired for much of the game, clinched the equalizer with a short-range effort from Rafael Marquez in the 79th minute. Earlier South Africa president Jacob Zuma has officially declared the World Cup open. The scores were 0-0 during the first half however Mexico were denied a goal for offside in an entertaining opening half to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
